Abstract

“Legal communication” refers to the way in which the sphere of what is legally relevant is communicated within society. The question to be dealt with in the paper is how this specific type of legal communication can be identified and how it can be distinguished from other socially relevant spheres of communication (politics, art, economy, science, …). To answer this question from a linguistic point of view (based on conversation analysis and text linguistics) two domains of legal communication will be discussed and analyzed in an exemplary way: legal communication manifested as face-to-face interaction among copresent participants on the one hand, and legal communication based on the readability of texts on the other.
